IFTA Filing by State With Portal Links and Due Dates

IFTA Filing by State With Portal Links and Due Dates

Your trucks cross six states a week, and every state's fuel tax site only talks about itself. That's the problem with IFTA filing by state. You file with your base jurisdiction only, so this page puts the agency, portal and next due dates for the major base states in one place.

Key takeaways

  • You file one quarterly return with your base jurisdiction only

  • The Q3 2026 return is due November 2, 2026

  • Florida requires electronic filing from October 1, 2026

IFTA filing by state starts with your base jurisdiction

You file IFTA with your base jurisdiction only, and it processes the return, sends you the rates and audits your records on behalf of every member jurisdiction. The IFTA Clearinghouse carrier page lists each jurisdiction's contact.

The IFTA Articles of Agreement (R212) define your base jurisdiction as where your qualified motor vehicles are registered, where your records are kept and where some of their travel accrues. For the basics, see how IFTA works in trucking.

What changed in 2026

Some vendor lists still say "online or by mail." Three of those entries are out of date.

  • Florida. Per FLHSMV, Senate Bill 488 requires all IFTA tax returns to be filed electronically, effective October 1, 2026.

  • Pennsylvania. It isn't mail only. The PA Department of Revenue says IFTA returns can be filed online through myPATH.

  • Texas. The Comptroller expects Webfile and accepts paper only in case of hardship.

IFTA due dates for the next four quarters

Under Articles of Agreement R960, the quarterly IFTA tax return and full payment are due the last day of the month after the quarter closes. If that day is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the due date moves to the next business day.

Two of the next four deadlines roll.

Annual filers are due January 31. A quarter with zero miles still needs a return, per FLHSMV, the Illinois DOR and CDTFA. Your Form 2290 HVUT deadline runs on a separate annual cycle.

How to read the IFTA tax matrix before you file

Every rate your base jurisdiction sends traces back to the IFTA tax matrix, published quarterly. Three details change what you owe.

  • Preliminary status. The 4th Quarter 2026 matrix says it's not final until December 4, 2026, so re-pull it before you file.

  • Surcharge lines. Kentucky, Virginia and Indiana carry separate surcharge rows, and CDTFA lists the same three.

  • Oregon. Its rate is zero, but CDTFA says its miles and gallons still go on the return.

The surcharge is where carriers get caught. CDTFA says surcharges aren't collected at the pump, and you can't claim tax-paid gallons on that line. So any taxable mile in Kentucky, Virginia or Indiana creates tax due, wherever you fueled.

State pages lag, too. Indiana DOR's fuel tax page still shows rates for July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026, while the 4Q 2026 matrix carries newer ones. And this fuel tax surcharge isn't the fuel surcharge you bill shippers.

IFTA license and decal renewal by state

Renewal season for 2027 IFTA license and decals is open now.

  • Illinois and Ohio. Renewal opens October 1. Ohio must approve it by December 31 and won't renew with unfiled returns.

  • California. Renewal begins December 1.

  • New York. Renewal decals can go on from November, and current ones stay valid through February.

Submit by December 31. Illinois and CDTFA then honor the old decals through the last day of February. If you're growing from owner-operator to three trucks, every new unit adds decals.

What to have ready before you log in to your base jurisdiction's portal

  • Total miles, across IFTA and non-IFTA jurisdictions

  • Miles by jurisdiction for each qualified motor vehicle

  • Gallons bought per jurisdiction, from your fleet fuel card statements

  • Credentials, since North Carolina needs an access code and MyTax Illinois uses two-step verification

For the paper trail behind them, see the records an IFTA audit asks for.

Three dates for your calendar

  • November 2, 2026, Q3 2026 return due

  • December 31, 2026, renewal submission deadline

  • February 1, 2027, Q4 2026 return due

Where Fintruck Fits

Fintruck is AI-native accounting for trucking companies, built for trucking from day one. Its tax package includes IFTA mileage and fuel tax tracking, so your miles and gallons by jurisdiction are in the books when the quarter closes.

You still file in your base state's portal, just with the numbers ready. Here's what to look for in trucking accounting software. Fintruck starts at $50 a month.

FAQs

Do I file IFTA in every state I drive through?

No. You file one quarterly return with your base jurisdiction, which credits and pays the other member jurisdictions from it.

When is the next IFTA return due?

Q3 2026 is due November 2, 2026, because October 31 falls on a Saturday. Q4 2026 is due February 1, 2027.

Which states have an IFTA fuel tax surcharge?

On the 4th Quarter 2026 matrix, Kentucky, Virginia and Indiana carry separate surcharge lines. You pay these on taxable miles regardless of where you fueled.

Can I still file IFTA by mail?

Only in some base states. Florida requires online filing from October 1, 2026, Texas accepts paper only in hardship cases, and Georgia still accepts a mailed IFTA-100.
